 Leucovorin

Common brand name: Wellcovorin

Other names: Leucovorin may also be called folinic acid, calcium leucovorin or citrovorum factor.

Why is this drug prescribed?
Leucovorin is used to lessen the harmful effects of methotrexate (a cancer medication), when given in high doses. Leucovorin is also used along with fluorouracil (a cancer medication) to treat colon cancer. In addition, leucovorin may be used to prevent or treat certain kinds of anemia (a condition characterized by a decreased amount of hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells).

How is this drug given?
Leucovorin may be injected directly into your vein through an IV (intravenously), injected directly into your muscle (intramuscularly) through a needle and syringe or it may be given by mouth (orally) in a pill form. Your doctor will decide which form of leucovorin is best for you.

What are some side effects I might experience?
In most patients, leucovorin does not cause any side effects; however, in some patients, the following side effects have been reported: diarrhea, lightheadedness, sores in the mouth or throat, mild nausea or vomiting, and allergic reactions (hives, itching, swelling of the face or heads, trouble breathing).

Please note: Some side effects may occur in some people. Always contact your doctor if you have questions about any side effects.

What special instructions should I know when taking this medication?

  • Before starting leucovorin, tell your health care provider about any other medicines you may be taking, including vitamins, herbals, dietary supplements, and other prescription and nonprescription (over-the-counter) medications.
  • Always take your medication at the scheduled time. If you miss a scheduled dose, call your doctor right away.
  • Your prescription label tells you how much to take at each dose -- follow these instructions carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part that you do not understand. Do not skip doses or take less of the medication than your doctor prescribes. Do not discontinue this medication without talking to your doctor. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription.
  • Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory so your response to this drug can be monitored.

What are the storage conditions?

  • Keep this medication in its original container, with the lid tightly closed.
  • Keep it and all medications out of the reach of children.
  • Store leucovorin at room temperature and away from sunlight, heat and moisture. Do not store this medication in the bathroom or near a sink; moisture may cause the medicine to break down.

When should I call my doctor?
Call your doctor if you:

  • Have not taken the medication at the scheduled time or if you were unable to take all of the prescribed doses
  • Have any unusual or persistent symptoms
  • Have any questions or concerns
