 Mineral Supplement Medication (Iron Polysaccharide)

What is iron polysaccharide?
Iron polysaccharide (Niferex) is a mineral supplement used to treat iron deficiency anemia. By adding much-needed iron, this drug is able to stimulate the production of hemoglobin -- the oxygen-carrying part of the red blood cell.

How do I take iron polysaccharide?
Iron polysaccharide is best taken on an empty stomach, with water or fruit juice, at least on hour before or two hours after a meal. However, to reduce the chance of an upset stomach, it may be taken with food immediately after meals.

If you miss a dose of iron polysaccharide, skip the missed dose and return to your regular medication schedule. It is important to never take two doses at once.

What are the side effects of iron polysaccharide?
Iron polysaccharide may cause common side effects that may diminish during treatment including nausea and vomiting. If these symptoms continue or become bothersome, check with your physician. Black stools are also a common and harmless side effect if the medication is taken orally.

Contact your physician as soon as possible if you experience any of the following symptoms while taking iron polysaccharide:

  • Abdominal cramping or soreness
  • Sharp stomach pains
  • Sticky black stools with red streaks

If you notice any other side effects not listed above, contact your physician or nurse.
