 Esomeprazole Magnesium

Common brand name: Nexium

Why is this drug prescribed?
Your doctor has prescribed esomeprazole magnesium. This medicine is classified as a proton-pump inhibitor and has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) as well as the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection in duodenal ulcer disease.

How and when should I take esomeprazole magnesium?
Take esomeprazole magnesium one hour before meals. If you have swallowing difficulties, add one tablespoon of applesauce (not hot) to an empty bowl, open the capsules and empty the pellets into the applesauce. Do not chew or crush the pellets. You may take antacids along with this medicine.

The dosage will vary from person to person. Follow the directions on the prescription label carefully. If there is any part you do not understand, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Do not take any more or less than is prescribed, and do not take it more often than prescribed. NEVER stop taking esomeprazole magnesium without first talking to your doctor.

What special precautions should I follow before using this drug?
Before taking esomeprazole magnesium, tell your doctor if you are allergic to esomeprazole, omeprazole (Prilosec), or any other medicines; have liver disease; or are taking other prescription medicines (warfarin, ketoconazole, digoxin), over-the-counter drugs, supplements, herbal or vitamin products. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Esomeprazole magnesium is not recommended if breastfeeding because it might be distributed in the breast milk.
